We continue to receive concerns regarding unsafe e-moto and motorized bike use, including excessive speeds, weaving through traffic, riding on restricted trails, and trespassing on private property. These behaviors pose significant risks to riders and the community. Our region has experienced multiple serious, life-threatening accidents involving young riders.
In coordination with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan Air Line Trail, the Township is reinforcing public awareness and addressing unsafe and prohibited vehicle use. This effort applies throughout the Township, not solely to the Air Line Trail. Violations may result in enforcement action, including citations or vehicle impoundment where authorized by law and Township ordinance. This weekend 5 e-motos were confiscated and 3 others were made to walk home.
Township ordinance prohibits privately owned motor vehicles on Township-owned, leased or controlled property, except on roads and in parking lots designated by the Township Supervisor or an authorized representative. E-motos are prohibited on the Commerce Township Air Line Trail.
Parents and riders are responsible for understanding their vehicle's classification and the laws, restrictions and safety requirements that apply to its operation. Our shared goal is to prevent serious injuries, protect students and other community members, and ensure that families understand the responsibilities and legal restrictions associated with operating motorized recreational vehicles.
