Susan L. Gross has served the residents of Commerce Township since January, 1973. She was the Township Deputy Treasurer until her appointment to Township Treasurer in January 1993. She was elected Commerce Township Treasurer in November 1993, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

 

In 1986, Susan was awarded the C.P.F.A. (Certified Professional Finance Administrator) by the Municipal Treasurers Association of the United States and Canada. She was the first Deputy Treasurer in the State of Michigan to become certified by the national organization. In 1999, the Michigan Municipal Treasurer’s Association presented her with the coveted P.R.I.M.E. Award representing “Professional Recognition in Municipal Excellence”. Susan is a licensed financial analyst with Citigroup/Primerica Financial Services and is security licensed in the states of Michigan, Kentucky & Florida. She holds a SEC Security License #6 and #63.

 

Susan is also responsible for implementing a partnership with White Lake Township in establishing the Senior Transportation Program which provides transportation for the senior and handicapped residents of the Township.

 

Mrs. Gross is a member of the Commerce Township Board of Trustees and presently serves as the Treasurer for the Commerce Township Downtown Development Authority, the Commerce Twp. Breakfast Committee, the Friends of Commerce Library Committee and the Commerce Twp. Cultural Center Committee. She is currently volunteer coordinator for the Rebuilding Together with Christmas- In-April*Oakland County Committee which renovates homes for the senior and handicapped residents of the Township.

 

Susan’s past professional service includes Chairperson of the Lakes Area Youth Assistance, co-founder of the Taste of the Lakes Fundraiser, Relay For Life, Inter-Lakes Girls Softball League Board of Directors, Treasurer for the Rebuilding Together with Christmas In April*Oakland County, Parliamentarian of the Michigan Municipal Treasurer’s Association, Commerce Township Parks & Recreation Committee member, Commerce/White Lake Senior Advisory Board, and served on the Education Committee, Membership Committee and Legislation Committee on the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association. She served as Chairperson of the Commerce Township Community Homes, Inc., Michigan’s only community operated foster care group home for retarded citizens.

 

Susan is a member of the Oakland County Treasurer’s Association, Michigan Municipal Finance Officers Association, Michigan Township’s Association, Municipal Treasurer’s Association of the U.S. & Canada, Lakes Areas Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Officials Network and is a Kentucky Colonel.

 

Susan and her husband, Richard, have lived in Commerce Township for over 30 years and have an adult daughter, Stacy, who is a firefighter/paramedic for the Commerce Township Fire Department.

By State Statute, the Treasurer is responsible for the collection and distribution of all monies due the Township as well as the collection of both summer and winter taxes.  Approximately 50,000 tax bills are mailed each year.  This includes informational tax bills mailed to homeowners who have a mortgage escrow paying their tax bill and special assessment bills.

 

Your Township Treasurer collects and distributes your property tax bill for the following entities:

*State of Michigan (State Education Tax)

* Oakland Community College

*Oakland Schools

* School Districts of Walled Lake Consolidated and Huron Valley Schools

* County of Oakland

* Commerce Township General Fund, Police, Fire, Library, Open Space

*Special Assessment Districts (Sewer, Water, Roads, Street Lights,

Aquatic Weed Control, Snow Removal, Refuse Disposal, Dust Control).

 

Additional Responsibilities Include:

 

*Maintains accurate records for all monies received by the Township

*Invests surplus funds to meet cash flow needs of the Township

*Reconciles all Township bank accounts

*Administers and collects all special assessment districts

* Collects Oakland County dog license fees

*Serves as the Treasurer for the Commerce Twp. Downtown Development

Authority, the Museum Committee, and Friends of the Commerce Township Community Library

*Serves as a liaison to various community and appointive township boards

*Serves as one of seven voting members on the Township Board of Trustees
