Safe Handling of HHW

Household cleaners and other products that may contain hazardous ingredients should always be handled with care – during use, storage and eventual transportation to a household hazardous waste collection event.

Storage & Safety Tips

  • Store HHW in original containers on high shelves or locked cabinets, out of the reach of children & pets
  • If original container is not used - ensure the container can hold the product (i.e. will not disintegrate) & label it with the product name & ingredients (or attach original label)
  • Keep containers dry to avoid corrosion
  • Keep HHW away from fire, extreme heat source or cigarettes
  • Avoid breathing fumes
  • Never use chemical containers for other purposes
  • Never burn, crush or puncture aerosol containers
  • Never mix ammonia and bleach - it creates a toxic gas

Preparation for Transport to Collection Event

  • Close container tightly
  • If original container is not used, label with product name or active ingredients (or attach original label)
  • Secure multiple products in a sturdy box - avoid placing in garbage bags or loose in vehicle
  • Store similar products together
  • Wear gloves when boxing up products for transport
  • Do not mix different chemicals together
  • Do not transport any leaking or open containers
  • Pack materials in an upright position for travel, in the trunk or on the floor of your vehicle
  • Do not wear contact lenses if handling HHW
