DO use it up
Use products for their intended purpose and buy only as much as you need within a reasonable time period.
DO give the product to someone else who can use it
If you no longer want a product, find a friend that might appreciate it.
DO save the product for a municipal collection event such as NO HAZ
If a product is expired or you cannot use it up, safely store until you can participate in a household hazardous waste collection event.
DO avoid buying hazardous products in the future
Often, less toxic products are available. Also, resist the urge to buy in bulk, noting the expiration date.
DON’T throw it in the garbage
Although not regulated, household hazardous waste should not go to the landfill.
DON’T pour it down the drain
These poisons enter a septic system or municipal sewer system and eventually make their way into our water system.
DON’T pour into storm drains or gutters
Hazardous products can travel directly to nearby waterways, poisoning wildlife, plants, or contaminating drinking water.
DON’T burn it
Burning off products like solvents or gasoline adds to air pollution, and may expose you to hazardous fumes.
DON’T dump or bury it
Hazardous chemicals may run off into waterways, or seep into groundwater.
