A friend of mine stopped by our family’s farm one day while I was planting tomatoes. He asked me if I would be
interested in helping the community grow. He suggested I send a resume to the Township Supervisor.
I did, and this is what happened:

• Appointed to the Civil Service Commission from 1975 to 1985, served 10 years
• Appointed to the Parks & Recreation Committee from 1978 to 1985, served 8 years
• Appointed to the Planning Commission from 1979 to 1985, served 6 years
• Elected to the position of Trustee in 1986, served 1 year
• Appointed to position of Township Clerk in 1987, and Elected in 1988, served 9 years
• Appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals, served 4 years
• Appointed to Downtown Development Authority in 1997, currently serve as a member
• Elected to position of Township Supervisor in 1997 in which position I currently serve

I have also served, with the following organizations:

• Museum Cultural Committee,
• Oakland County Chapter Michigan Township Association
• Secretary of the Downtown Development Authority
• Michigan Association of Clerks
• Federal Funding Committee, (RCOC)
• Director on the Michigan Township Association
• Oakland County Supervisors Association
• Oakland County Association of Township Supervisors.

My goal and objectives are to provide the best services we can afford for the residents of Commerce Township while still keeping taxes low. I‘d like our parks to improve and develop into areas for all residents to enjoy. My day to day responsibilities include coordinating transportation, infrastructure, public safety and planning activities in the Township. I enjoy meeting residents and listening to their ideas (or reading them – I check my email every day). I have to maintain a balanced budget, as we all do. Much like your own family’s budget, we also have to make choices about what we need versus what we want. Above all, we must stay in the black during these troubled economic times.

As much as I want our parks to provide both active and passive recreational opportunities, I also want our residents to realize that active involvement is always more beneficial than being a passive observer. You can help; send me YOUR resume! Thomas K. Zoner, Supervisor
